Astronomers witnessed a supernova shortly after it exploded in the M82 galaxy on January 21, 2014. The image above, taken by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, allowed the supernova to be classified as a “Type Ia” Supernova which they believe insoles the denotation of a white dwarf.

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory captured a Type la supernova Jan. 21. Scientists are hoping that the gathered data will provide a look into the environment of a star before it exploded earlier this year as well as what triggered one of the closets supernovas witnessed in decades.
